AEP 2025: Top 10 Mistakes Vancouver Seniors Make (And How to Avoid Them)
By Timothy Jones••7 min read
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7. In Vancouver and Clark County, I see the same avoidable mistakes every year. Here’s how to steer clear and make the best decision for 2026.
- Waiting until the last week. Appointments fill up quickly. Start early so we can compare options thoroughly.
- Looking only at premiums. Compare total out-of-pocket costs, including copays, deductibles, and MOOP.
- Not checking provider networks. Verify your doctors and hospitals (PeaceHealth, Legacy Salmon Creek, The Vancouver Clinic) are in-network.
- Ignoring prescription coverage. Formularies change—always run a Part D or MAPD medication check.
- Skipping the ANOC. Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change tells you what changed for 2026.
- Assuming last year’s plan is still best. Benefits and networks shift—compare again this year.
- Missing Special Enrollment nuances. Moving, Extra Help, and other SEPs may apply—ask before deciding.
- Forgetting dental/vision details. Benefits vary widely—confirm what’s actually included.
- Not considering travel needs. If you split time in California, network flexibility matters.
- Going it alone. Working with an independent, local broker is free and saves time and money.
